Editorial policy: sources, corrections and AI use

Every fact we publish traces to a public source. Software drafts our short stories from sourced facts, and a check compares each sentence to its source before it goes live. We never name private residents. Safety numbers that go quiet say so. Mistakes get fixed on the page, with a note.

Sources

Every fact has a source and a time. Live numbers come from official feeds, and each page ends with a How we know note. Stories come from public records: agendas, minutes, permits, licenses and outage maps. Social media posts are not sources. We never quote them.

Our own analysis

When we say the lake is 2°F warmer than this date last year, that is our math on our saved history. We show the number and the date. The How we know note says what we compared.

Safety rule

When a safety number is past its age limit, the page says "Status unknown" and links the official source. We never say in our own words that a road, a fire or the power is fine. We would rather show nothing than show something old.

The desks

Each story is signed by a desk, not a person: the Lake desk, the Town Hall desk, the Mountain desk or the Table desk. That desk answers for it.

Businesses

A business appears only while it is verified open. Any closed signal, or 7 days without a fresh check, hides it from every page until we check again. A temporarily closed place always carries that label. Our picks are labeled "Our pick". We never say we ate somewhere we did not.

Privacy

Private residents are never named or quoted. Home sales are reported as counts and medians, never addresses or owners.

How software is used

Software reads feeds and drafts stories from a pack of sourced facts. Each sentence keeps its fact IDs. A check compares every sentence to its source. A gate keeps the writing plain. A meeting summary has 3 stages: agenda preview, video draft and final. The final is checked against the minutes. The stage shows on the page.

Photos and art

Photos of real places are real photos, credited and linked to the owner. Made-up art is only for general topics like taxes or outages. It is labeled "Illustration", and it never shows a real place.

Corrections

Want a fix? Email corrections@inclinevillagenews.com. A corrected page keeps a note with the date. A retracted story keeps its address and shows the correction in place of the story.

Questions people ask

How does Incline Village News use AI?
Software drafts short stories from a pack of sourced facts and a style guide. Each sentence keeps its fact IDs, and a check compares it to the source. Nothing goes live from an unchecked draft.
How do I request a correction?
Use the Report a problem link at the bottom of any page, or email corrections@inclinevillagenews.com. Tell us what is wrong. We check the source and fix the page, and the correction note stays on it.
Do you name private residents?
No. Private residents are never named or quoted, including people who speak at public comment. Officials and staff are named with their titles.
