Why the power goes out here
Storms bring down trees, and heavy snow weighs on lines. Planned work also shuts power off for a few hours. NV Energy posts planned work on its map before it starts, and we show it.
Fire-weather shutoffs
On days of extreme fire danger, NV Energy can cut power on purpose to stop a spark. The utility calls it public safety outage management. It sends calls, texts and emails to customers in the zone. Keep your contact details current in your NV Energy account.
Medical needs
If someone at home uses a medical device that needs power, plan a backup before the storm. A battery pack or a ride to a friend's house works.
Winter storms
Storms are the usual cause of long outages in the mountains. Keep a flashlight, a charged phone and a plan for heat. Check Mt Rose Highway before you drive to Reno for supplies. Chain controls and closures show on the roads page.
Internet and cell
Cable and fiber outages are not on this page. Report them to your provider. Cell service in the basin can fade when the power is out for many hours and tower batteries run down.

Power is a safety feed. If we cannot read the map for more than 10 minutes, the card above says "Status unknown" and shows no number. We never leave an old count on the page.
