What each number means
Lake level is how high Lake Tahoe stands above sea level. The natural rim is 6,223 feet. When the lake sits above the rim, it can spill into the Truckee River. Below it, the lake cannot flow out.
Snow is the depth of water you would get if the snowpack melted. It matters more than snow depth, because wet snow and dry snow can be the same depth and hold very different water. In summer and early fall, the page shows the peak of the winter just ended.
Power outages count the outages that started in the last 7 days. We read the power company's map every few minutes. If our feed is late, the page says so and does not guess.
Home sales use the middle price of every sale in the last 12 months. A year smooths out the swings. One month can move a lot on a few lakefront homes. The county checks each deal for about two months, so the newest months can change.
Building permits count new permits filed in the last three full months, against the same three months a year ago.
Why we compare
A number alone tells you little. A lake level is only news next to last year's. So each block shows its date and one comparison. The charts let you hover for exact values and hide a year.
Go deeper
The lake page, the snow report, the housing report, the outage page and the permits page hold the full detail. The data sets have every row with a CSV.
