How we measured

PM2.5 is fine particles in the air, in micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). Wildfire smoke is the usual cause of high days here.

History comes from EPA Air Quality System daily files for the Tahoe City monitor, the closest PM2.5 monitor to town. Days after the last validated file come from AirNow and are preliminary. We keep only days with at least 18 hours of data.

A smoke day has a daily average above 35.4 µg/m³, the EPA 24-hour level where air turns unhealthy for sensitive people. Recent days with only an AQI reading count as smoke days above AQI 100.

These are monitor readings, not model guesses. They can differ from the air at your house, since the monitor is miles away.
